Random babble . . .

Back on civilized turf, “civilized” being defined as any location with a few decent camera shops, I actually spotted a Sigma BF in a shop window. It was surprising, as it appears a good bit bigger and boxier than the TL, with which some reviewers have compared it. Whatever the case, an EVF-less camera is not for me.

If Sigma brings to the market a fuller-featured L-mount camera, it’ll surely get my consideration, as it would also bring more value to their L-mount lenses. Say what you want about “compatibility,” every manufacturer includes something in their bodies to cripple third-party lenses in one way or another. It would be great to see Sigma have its own line and go head-to-head with Canikony.

It has been repeatedly said than an M camera is more of an emotional choice than a logical one. Having succumbed to the “lure of the M” several times over the past dozen years, I’d agree. Another pang came recently but got sharply overruled by logic. Even with the pricey diopter, critical focus with a rangefinder was hit and miss for me. And the accessory EVF options only diluted the M experience.

THEN came word that there will soon be an M camera with an EVF. Unfortunately, it’s based on the M11 and the Sony sensor I have come to revile. Maybe that’s a good thing, because I’m sure the M11-V will also be well beyond what I’m willing to part with, especially with SL2 bodies going for about a third of what M11s sell for in these parts. Oh, well, one day…

One bright note is that I was able to quickly trundle off the 50 ‘cron-SL ASPH in favor of a 50 ‘lux-M ASPH. First impression is that the somewhat dusty glass of the previous copy might have been a bit better wide open than the current flawless copy. Time will tell.

One thing that seems for sure: after years of impulsive swapping gear in and out, I’m finally settling on some things I like and making fewer changes. Or maybe just getting too old and too lazy to bother . . .
