On second thought . . .

. . . maybe I was a bit harsh in my assessment of the Sigma 17mm f4.

Out yesterday to shoot the Asoke intersection, as I’ve done regularly over the past two decades with whatever wide glass I happened to have at the time, I noticed how detailed the image was from corner to corner.

On a whim, I tweaked a couple of sliders in Lightroom and managed to clear up most of the complex distortion. In terms of tonal gradience, the 19mm Elmarit-R v. 2 is still the best I’ve used on that scene. But the Sigma is sharper in the corners with a very appealing draw. Best of all, it can be had for about 20% of what a used copy of the Elmarit goes for.

Probably more than once on these pages I’ve said that Aizu is the new Wetzlar. Maybe I’d better rethink that one, too. In recent years, Aizu has proven itself to be one of a kind in terms of affordable glass.
